The European Film Academy has announced the first part of the feature films that will be recommended for nomination for the 2020 European Film Awards.

Due to Covid-19 and its restrictions, the selection of 2020 will be announced in two steps. The second part of the list will be published in September.

The two-step announcement allows the inclusion of films that would have premiered by 31 May 2020 and will have been shown in cinemas or online before the end of November 2020 - either at a festival or in a regular cinema.

Among the first 32 films now announced are CORPUS CHRISTI, MOTHERLAND and LET THERE BE LIGHT, three films that FFC 2019 had in its programme. LET THERE BE LIGHT by Marko Škop was also the winner of the U18 Youth Film Competition.

CAT IN THE WALL also made it onto the first EFA list. The film by director Vesela Kazakova and producer Mina Mileva received the coco Post Pitch Award (endowed with 25,000 euros) on the East-West co-production market connecting cottbus.

The EFA list also includes the film FINAL REPORT, the latest work by István Szabó, Honorary President of the FilmFestival Cottbus.

Parts 1 and 2 of the EFA Feature Film Selection are selected by a committee consisting of the EFA Board and invited experts.

In the coming weeks, the more than 3,800 members of the European Film Academy will review the selected films and, after the announcement of Part 2, will vote on the final nominations in the categories European Film, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenwriter.

The nominations will then be announced on 7 November at the Seville International Film Festival in Spain. An 8-member jury will decide on the winners in the categories European Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Make-up & Hair, Original Music, Sound and Visual Effects.

The 33rd European Film Awards ceremony with the presentation of the winners will take place on 12 December in Reykjavik.
