On April 21st, 2019 in Ukraine the comedian Volodymyir Selenskyj was elected president with an overwhelming majority – almost without political experience and without a programme.

The audience of the FilmFestival Cottbus already knows Selenskyj from the leading role in the film SERVANT OF THE PEOPLE, based on the YouTube series of the same name. The film was shown in 2017 in the FFC section "National Hits".
The political satire is about an idealist who promises his voters the blue sky and the fight against omnipresent corruption. The real Selenskyj is currently following in the footsteps of his fictitious alter ego with the same themes. Ukraine has chosen – between political disenchantment and hopes for a better future. Which would have turned fiction into reality, with unpredictable consequences for political culture: a refreshment of the frozen political scene or a new form of populism?
