Eine sorbische Folkloregruppe - Sprjewjan. Serbska Folklorna Skupin

A Sorbian Folklore Group - Sprjewjan. Serbska Folklorna Skupina

Michael Börner
GDR, 1987, 16 Min

Sorbian musical heritage, embedded in the Lusatian countryside, as depicted by this portrait of the folk ensemble Sprjewan, founded in 1979 and in existence to the current day. Who are the founding members and what motivated them to devote their energies to the preservation of age-old traditions?

Hanka, Rolf, Maria, Tomas, Alojs and Bernadet work non-descript day jobs, ranging from electrician, to mid-wife and teacher. Some of them speak fluent Sorbian, others only came into contact with the language at school. In a series of discussions, songs and landscape shots the film outlines the relationship between music, nature and culture, as well as the life stories of these individuals, who have resolved to transport an age-old tradition to the modern age.
