LOMO - The Language of many Others

LOMO - The Language of many Others

Julia Langhof
Germany, 2017, 101 Min

Digital natives on a quest for meaning: due to take his A-levels, Karl suddenly refuses to play ball. He's tired of having to live up to his parents' ambitions and emulate the achievements of his sister. Instead he prefers to update his blog, which he uses both to philosophise on the world and provide a candid account of his everyday experiences.

"Do you still have sex?" asks Karl, aka Lomo, during dinner with his distinguished parents in the garden of the family villa. The video is promptly uploaded to this blog and generates a stir, much to the chagrin of his father. Karl regularly escapes from reality to the digital world, with his followers coming more and more to represent his social support network. At the same time Karl increasingly distances himself from his family and classmates, with his interest for the real world sustained only by his feelings for the nonchalant Doro. Ultimately let down by love, Karl seeks revenge and causes a great deal of distress in the process. Having turned to his digital friends for help, he now gradually becomes their puppet, as they direct his actions via live stream. Is he wise to surrender control over his life? In answering this question the film manages to incorporate both light-hearted and captivating scenes into its innovative narrative form almost seamlessly. JG
