Lausitzer LesART: Jutta Voigt, “Stierblutjahre – The Bohemian World of the East“

Feature writer Jutta Voigt recounts the yearning for another life experienced by many during the GDR period. The focus is on artists, bohemians and those failed by the socialist system, as well as the evolution they experienced from the rebellious elitism and pathos related to the dawning of a new era, to a more critical and reform-minded attitude in the seventies, up to the distance and indifference felt in the eighties. In her book the author describes the subcultural groupings that then existed in Berlin, Dresden and Leipzig; at once radical, light-hearted, often intoxicated and always impassioned.Tickets can be reserved by calling 0355 38060-24 / or online www.lernzentrum-cottbus.de (event in German)

Esscobar
EXHIBITION: Paintings by Ekaterina Orba

The Esscobar hosts a presentation, entitled “Visual Proof of the Impossibility of Making Something Happen”, featuring the latest experimental paintings from artist Ekaterina Orba. These abstract works contain strokes of a paintbrush that allow no corrections; consisting of acrylic paint on paper, they speak of a spontaneity that nevertheless, when taken as a whole, represents a coherent body of work. The Akkordeon Salon Orchester will provide musical accompaniment to a celebration of the exhibition reaching its halfway point on November 9thth, 21.00, within the framework of their East European tour.

EXHIBITION: Video installation “Visiting Homeland”

One plotline, two films: the everyday life of Emma Krahlowa, a Sorbian woman from Rohne, as she feeds the ducks, sharpens her sickle, picks blueberries, scrubs laundry, and puts on traditional costume. One in black and white, the other in colour, the works juxtapose a rural idyll with the realities of industry, the distinction stressed by the presence/absence of a coal digger. In this video installation projected onto two screens artist Frauke Rahrent presents the idyll as illusory and the stereotype as deceptive. What do these images of home conceal? A vernissage will be held on November 7th, 17.00.Opening hours: Wed-Sat 12.00-24.00, Sun 12.00-18.00
