Founded in 2017 by seven European film festivals, MIOB aims to promote, show and discuss European cinema in all its diversity, also to initiate change and to bring issues such as environmental and climate protection or diversity to the fore in programme curation.

In addition to FilmFestival Cottbus, MIOB includes: Crossing Europe Film Festival Linz/Austria, Seville European Film Festival/Spain, European Film Festival Palić/Serbia, Les Arcs Film Festival/France, European Film Forum Scanorama/Lithuania, Trieste Film Festival/Italy.

Since 2020, MIOB has been funded by the Creative Europe - MEDIA Programme of the European Union.

Every year, MIOB presents the MIOB New Vision Award, worth €3,000, which honours an artistically outstanding arthouse film by the new, young generation of directors, and the MIOB In Shorts Award (15 short films have been nominated and are available for "Watch & Vote" online streaming at home for one month before the winning film is awarded at the 33rd FFC).
