The Cottbus FilmShow has been a welcome addition to FilmFestival Cottbus since 2003. In line with the motto of “we show everything”, the FilmShow provides an open screen for the presentation of work by semi-professional filmmakers interested in fi lmmaking and experimentation. The FilmShow offers a specific and individual perspective on the town and the surrounding region, together with the people who live there. ............................................................................................................ Lila and Janek are in love; Janek however has lost Lila’s trust. To win it back he needs to do something radical and show her that he cares. But what she asks him to do oversteps the bounds of acceptability. When the predictable tragedy occurs, the parents of both teenagers are forced to face facts and deal with the consequences. All Lila can do is hope for the support of her estranged father, who returns from abroad to lend her a helping hand. A tale of manipulation, trust and extreme devotion. AS / JN

Russian Day
Sasha and Olga travel from Moscow to Crimea. The two teenagers are on the search for Olga‘s father, who abandoned her mother after an affair and now lives in a quaint, derelict house by the sea. Before entering the house Olga is overcome by doubt and asks her friend to swap roles. Sasha‘s convincing impersonation leads to further complication of the situation however, with each individual coming under self-scrutiny. In her feature fi lm debut Nigina Sayfullaeva grapples with apparent and genuine values in individual relationships as well as society as a whole.

Thirteen-year-old Lili, beloved mixed-breed dog Hagen in tow, is unexpectedly required to move in with her father. When a neighbour denounces his daughter‘s illegal possession, Lili‘s father abandons the dog without the slightest hesitation; thus begins Hagen‘s odyssey from stray to attack dog, which culminates in an uprising of his fellow four-legged companions in misfortune. Guided by Hagen, the pack unleashes a city-wide campaign of terror. Kornél Mundruczó‘s unusual fi lm is a visually stunning parable on social marginalisation and authoritarian patterns of thought and power.

For young Russian-language teacher Zane her fi rst day at work begins on a disastrous note: Her musician-spouse leaves her for another woman and, if that weren‘t enough, her new pupils are also not exactly impressed with the new teacher and decide to skip the lesson. She is able however, step by step and with a large measure of idealism, to win over the class, to the point where a pupil falls in love with her, a development she reacts to with a decision that leads to serious consequences. With a cast augmented by amateur actors and, in places, documentary-like camera work, the director‘s debut feature fi lm provides authentic insight into teenage life in the suburbs of Riga.

Bollersdorf, Europe‘s geographical and demographic midpoint, is home to six tots (Ben, Rieke, Paul, Lene, Max and Suse) together with a smart coati by the name of Quatsch. When an association for consumer research sets up a shop in order to test its products on the locals and the village‘s elders are consigned to an old people‘s home, the kids are far from happy. They thus concoct a plan intended to make Bollersdorf unique again. A remarkably imaginative fi lm with brash child protagonists à la Pippi Longstocking and The Little Rascals.

A recently-passed law in Russia prohibits the propaganda amongst minors of “non-traditional sexual relationships”; parliamentarian Vitaly Milonov publicly described homosexuality as sick, sinful and abnormal. In order to respond to this onslaught, and provide a platform to homosexual youths in Russia, journalist Yelena Klimova initiated the internet project “Children 404”, the name a reference to the internet error message “error 404 – page not found”. An intimate report in which young homosexuals talk openly about the diffi culties of fi nding themselves.

Anton and Vlad, a gay Russian couple, lead a happy existence together. One day they are witness to a street brawl; they don‘t intervene. The following day they learn that a young homosexual lost his life in the incident, killed by right wing extremists. Plagued by moral dilemma, they attempt to uncover the crime, and discover the truth, turning from hunters to the hunted in the process. The fi lm realistically portrays the homophobic climate in contemporary Russia and the fear amongst homosexuals from the perspective of those affected.
