And there is another exciting female role in the film: that of the mother of the missing soldier. Since his body has not yet been found, she clings on to the hope that he is still alive. Both female figures are juxtaposed: one wants to go on living, the other holds on to the past. The film thus engages with classic female roles from socialist war films: the mother, symbolic of the homeland, and the lover, representative of a peaceful modern society. BLINDFOLD thus not only tells an individual story, but can also be seen as a commentary on the effects of the war in Ukraine, ongoing since 2014, on the entire social structure of the country.
