Thursday at the 35th FilmFestival Cottbus

The third day of the festival is dedicated to the major issues of our time – the environment, peace and identity.

BETWEEN BORDERS screens at 1 p.m. at the Obenkino cinema: with the start of the Russian invasion, Erko decides to help as a volunteer paramedic in Ukraine. But the longer his missions become, the further he distances himself from his family in Estonia. An Estonian perspective on the war in Ukraine.

At 3 p.m., the Glad-House screens SOWING THE SEEDS OF THE WILD by Dyba Lach. Following the mass fish die-off in the Oder River in 2022, caused by illegal toxic discharges, musician Michal Zygmunt embarks on a 1,300-kilometer river journey. What begins as a symbolic act turns into a deep commitment to environmental activism. A meditative and visually stunning film about humanity’s fragile relationship with nature.

The Ecumenical Evening begins at 5 p.m. in the Oberkirche St. Nikolai, transforming the church once again into a space of intercultural and interfaith exchange. The short film THE BORDER (F, 2025, dir. Daria Sliusarenko) follows a young man trying to escape conscription into the war. Stranded at a closed border, he faces a profound moral choice. The event also introduces the members of the Ecumenical Jury. Admission is free.

At 9 p.m., TOUCHED BY ETERNITY TOUCHED BY ETERNITY by Mārcis Lācis screens in the Obenkino. This darkly comic horror film from Latvia asks whether eternal life is truly worth the price when a shady crypto trader finds himself chosen by two vampires.
