1992, shortly after the fall of the Iron Curtain: 13-year-old Karolína dreams of travelling to America with her school's world-famous girls' choir – just like her older sister Lucie. When she finally succeeds, by means of her crystal-clear soprano voice, in catching the attention of the much admired, if formidable, choirmaster Mácha, she would appear to have been set on the path to fame. And yet amidst the strict discipline and dazzling performances, subtle acts of manipulation and an ever-greater overstepping of boundaries unfold. Ondřej Provazník captures BROKEN VOICES in the form of a sensitive, suspense-packed drama, one that calls to mind the case of the Bambini di Praga girls choir, whose director was found guilty of abusing young singers for decades. Foregoing sensationalism, the film traces, by means of sublime aesthetic imagery, the path of a young girl who finds herself ground down by a confluence of ambition, loyalty, and abuse. In doing so, it relentlessly portrays the fine line that exists between adulation and abuse—and the quiet strength required to find your own voice in spite of it all.
