FUTNI MENTEM
GONE RUNNING
Performance
Vera has always fulfilled her husband Zoltán's every wish. While working through his bucket list, Zoltán suffers a heart attack whilst kart racing. All that remained to be done was the marathon. His widow resolves to honour his wish, together with her three adult daughters. They, however, are anything but enthusiastic and not particularly athletic.
Director Gábor Herendi, who has previously directed several hit films, both light-hearted and serious, in his native Hungary, fully exploits the storyline's comic potential whilst lending it an emotional side with its love stories. Each of the daughters is representative of a troubled lifestyle: Dorina, a tough lawyer, has no private life to speak of while Kata is held back by her two sons and her partner. Emma is unable to hold down a job for longer than six months and, on top of that, is having affair with her boss.
What begins as slapstick however quickly evolves into a fast-paced emancipation comedy that takes more than a few venomous swipes at the macho mentality of Hungary under Viktor Orbán. Incidentally, this remake of the 2019 Czech blockbuster WOMEN ON THE RUN received no funding from the state film funding programme – apparently, the film wasn’t good enough. Hungarian cinema audiences saw things differently however: Having attracted upwards of 736,000 viewers to Hungarian cinemas, GONE RUNNING has proved the second-most successful Hungarian film since 1990.
