Mannen som kunne 75 språk

The Man who knew 75 Languages

Anne Magnussen, Paweł Dębski
Norway, Poland, Lithuania, 2016, 64 Min

"To my mind language is the key to the human soul"; these were the words of German publicist and polyglot Georg Sauerwein (1831-1904) who applied his linguistic talents to the protection of minority languages, including Sorbian. This animated biographical film, partly set in the Spreewald, features a mass of references to Lusatia.

Based on his many letters and notes, the film not only narrates Sauerwein's many battles with the German authorities, but also his life-long, unrequited love for Princess Elisabeth of Wied, later Queen of Romania. In the process archive footage and materials are merged with short sketches and animation in a way that pushes genre boundaries. A key episode in the film is Sauerwein's stay in Lusatia, during which he made the acquaintance of Sorbian composer Korla Awgust Kocor (voiced by Mirko Brankatschk); here we witness the witness the creation of "Ach mója góla ty zelena" ("Oh, my dearest green heather"), a song that marked the beginnings of a fruitful collaboration and long friendship between the two artists and can still be heard today. Sauerwein went on to play a leading role in the cultural movements of both Lithuania and Norway, proving himself in the process to be a pioneer of the European spirit. GL
