The investigative work of journalist Petr Vlček leads him to evidence of a multi-million dollar financial scandal involving a major energy company. As if that weren't enough, further enquiries suggest that his brother of all people is deeply mired in the case. The Czech adaptation of Norwegian TV crime series MAMMON was broadcast under the title MAMON. Together with the Polish adaption of the same series, PAKT, the FilmFestival Cottbus this year showcases the first two episodes of both productions. One storyline, two series: the locations, as well as character disposition and ultimately the way in which the works were addressed to their respective audiences, these aspects differ strongly. How do the works compare and contrast in terms of character portrayal? What about depictions of violence, aesthetic values, or the division of roles amongst men and women? BB

Vladimír Michálek - born 1956 in Mladá Boleslav, ČSSR. He graduated in documentary film from Prague’s FAMU in 1992. After graduation he went on to work as an assistant director and produced several documentaries. The release of AMERIKA saw the start of a successful directing career, with Michálek the recipient of numerous national and international awards over the years.
