Niemandsland

No man's land

Andreas Kleinert
Germany, 1997, 45 Min

On the Day of German Reunification in 1995 Andreas Kleinert and Johann Feindt pick up a camera and travel across Berlin. They capture the major and minor happenings occurring across the city in this documentary essay on the state of the nation that, though free of commentary, nevertheless both provokes and provides food for thought.

The wanderings on October 3rd, 1995, provide insight into the most varied of events, as they listen to chance passers-by, capture graffiti on film, and time and again find themselves drawn to Charly, an independent-minded individual who lives a life free from social compulsion: he lives self-sufficiently in the no man's land that constitutes the inner German border.

Indeed the film functions well without commentary, the footage and sound collages themselves sufficient in inviting viewers to make their own conclusions. A surprising find that deserves to reach a wider audience. KF
