The title alone says a lot about the main thrust of this film. The renowned choreographer Jan Kettler returns to Warsaw after twenty years in New York in order to find and coach a Polish couple that will then take part in an annual European dance contest. There had been a time in life when his priorities had been quite different: at the end of the eighties he abandoned his life by the Vistula, wife and child included, for the dance floor that back then meant the world to him. It's an episode he doesn't enjoy being reminded of. This is however exactly what Hanka, a young journalist, soon does when she crosses his path. She herself only recently found out from her mother that Kettler is in fact her father... and then there's Slawek, the somewhat bizarre dentist who Hanka is supposed to marry in a week's time, as well as Wojtek, the dance-loving bricklayer from the countryside who, on meeting Hanka, almost falls straight at her feet. When Wojtek signs up for Kettler's casting, he makes it through straight away to the second round, where together with a dozen other candidates he is to be trained by the master himself. It is from this group that the best dance couple will ultimately be nominated. Meanwhile however Wojtek's father breaks a leg and so he has to return to the construction site. All hope now seems lost for him. With Hanka's help he's nevertheless able to continue training. With the day of the competition, also Hanka's wedding day, arrives the moment of truth, on the dancefloor as well as before the altar.
