In 1989 the students were between five and ten years old, still went to playschool or were in their first years of school and otherwise spent their time playing outside without a care in the world. Their childish perspective of the year 1989 is, together with the fact that they grew up in such diverse countries as Czechoslovakia, East as well as West Germany, Israel and Sweden, the remarkable thing about this film.

When knitted together the result is a remarkably diverse mosaic of more or less autobiographical, retrospective and unsparingly frank children's perspectives on a year that also changed their lives: sorrowful, captivating and comical. (Helke Misselwitz, October 2009)
