OLIVER TWIST

OLIVER TWIST

Roman Polański
France, 2005, 128 Min

England in the mid-19th century. Oliver Twist grows up in an orphanage, surrounded by poverty, denied warmth and security. Finding himself apprenticed to a gravedigger, he flees to London. His new life in the foreign, great city hardly gets off to a fortuitous start: he falls into the clutches of Fagin, the notorious boss of a gang of orphan pickpockets. The unscrupulous crook Bill Sykes is an even more fearsome figure, who insists that Oliver must also be trained in the art of picking pockets. Before Oliver’s prospects eventually begins to look brighter, there’s a few more trials to be endured.

Each new generation succumbs to the breathtaking and timeless tale of Oliver Twist, the orphan who dared to ask for more. Roman Polański revived the world-famous classic with a film adaptation more elaborate and spectacular than any of its predecessors. He created visual worlds of stunning visual power, steeped himself in the sinister atmosphere of a bygone age and in the fascinating world of Charles Dickens, one of the great Victorian novelists.

Supported by the same crew that worked on his Oscar-winning THE PIANIST (2002), Polański throws new light on a story known to young and old alike – vivid, imaginative and timeless.
