PURE COOLNESS

Present-day Kyrgyzstan. A young couple decide to marry. Since the woman comes from a modern city, and the man from a rural area where the old customs are upheld, a clash seems inevitable between the strictly traditional country relatives and the liberal urbanites on the other side. Initially, however, it’s the seemingly tolerant parents of the bride who display their prejudices against provincials, whereas the bride begins to enjoy the villagers’ customs and manners while she’s preparing for the wedding. But then she sees her future bridegroom making love to another woman, and decides to go back to the city immediately. She thinks she’s found a lift, but it turns out to be an abduction: she has fallen victim to an archaic custom that demands that the woman remain at her kidnapper’s side. Disappointed by the behaviour of her first love, she’s prepared to give the new candidate a chance. The young woman and her kidnapper cautiously get closer to each other, until finally they are bound by tender love...

An unusual depiction of the gulf between traditional values and modern life. The film leaves viewers to make up their own minds about the problems by presenting a sombre tale with a compelling and fascinating lightness of tone.
