Sophie’s world is falling apart. There’s no work left for her in her small town, and time has ground to a standstill. But leaving is not an option, since she’s secretly in love with Sergey, a Russian deserter. And desperately afraid to rock the foundations of her family, on whom she is numbingly dependent. Touching and visually powerful, the film recounts a story of love in the midst of decay and collapse – a valid snapshot of the immediate post-1989 period. At the same time the figure of Sergey reminds us of those Soviet Army soldiers who became visible only once the time came for them to leave.
