DER VERSUCH ZU LEBEN

THE ATTEMPT AT LIVING

Johann Feindt
GDR, 1983, 88 Min
Anke Hahn

For three weeks the director worked on his thesis film in the casualty unit of the am Urban hospital in Berlin Kreuzberg. One already suspects what happened next: an eternal vicious circle of alcohol abuse, drugs and senile decay. Yet the director, who studied medicine, takes a closer look, allowing the stories to unfold from under the skin. He even follows certain "regulars" home. And the staff, how do they perceive of this Sisyphean undertaking and what does it do to them? A film for reflection on the meaning of life; and death.
