The high-rise quarter of Fužine in Ljubljana
is a microcosm of the former Yugoslavia:
Here live mostly immigrants, locally known
as "Cherfuri", from other once constituent
republics of the former federation. Friends
Marko, Adi, Aco and Dejan are second
generation Chefuri who hang out together
in an attempt to forget everyday problems:
Marko is upset due to the fact that a beautiful
television presenter has failed to take
notice of him and also since his father
Radovan refuses to resign himself to the
fact that Marko no longer wants to play
basketball. Adi is unable to comprehend not
only that his brother Sanel is a drug addict,
but why his father prefers to amuse himself
with Austrian waitresses rather than deal
with Sanel's addiction. Aco is having a
hard time with women and has resolved to
retaliate upon bus driver Damjanović.
Dejan in turn is worried as his mother
Sonja wants to move to the provinces.
One evening all four are arrested and the
world around them begins to fall apart.
Director Goran Vojnović is himself a Cherfur
and furthermore author of the correspondent
novel, which proved to be the literary
event of 2008 in Slovenia. This saw him
receive two high-profile literary awards,
the work was published across the former
Yugoslavia, as well as in the Czech Republic,
Poland and Sweden, and even made
a successful transition to the stage.
This tale draws its universal appeal from
the fact these four friends could just as
easily be based in Germany or any number
of European migrant scenes.
