EGY NAP

ONE DAY

Zsófia Szilágyi
Hungary, 2018, 99 Min

Just the usual craziness of everyday life for Anna and Szabolcs. They manage their marriage and the three children. The two older ones have to go to school with Daddy; Mummy takes the little one to the kindergarten. Then it’s work, the daughter has ballet, the youngest one gets sick, the grandmother helps out. The routine and the daily struggle have left their mark – everyday management instead of living.

It is the usual chaos in the evening with three children and working parents. They go mad In the bathtub, the youngest needs particular attention and the eldest feels unchallenged. Then a female friend appears in the apartment at just the wrong time. Anna gives her the cold shoulder, suspecting an affair. But there is no time to discuss this with her husband Szabolcs. Both of them must function as parents and employees. The next morning, they only see each other over a hectic breakfast.

The director Zsófia Szilágyi has an almost documentary eye in her very precise observation of both a middle-class family with its constant problems with time and money, as well as hectic life in the metropolis of Budapest with its aggressive drivers, well-meaning colleagues and way too many little life lies. Taking stock not only in today's Hungary. JT
