VIA CARPATIA

VIA CARPATIA

Klara Kochańska, Kasper Bajon
Poland, Czech Republic, Macedonia, 2018, 75 Min

Piotr and Julia are a childless couple. In fact, they want to go on holiday to the south. But then this "holiday" becomes a completely different kind of adventure. Right in the middle of the 2016 refugee crisis, Piotr is to smuggle his unknown Syrian father to Poland. An ironic, bitter commentary on a saturated Europe which has lost its capacity for empathy after numerous "refugee discussions".

Designer cuisine, good wine and long working hours. However, Piotr and Julia don't have much to say to each other. Until Piotr's mother suddenly puts 10,000 Euros on the table and charges her son with smuggling the Syrian father from a refugee camp on the Greek-Macedonian border to Poland. Piotr had never seen this father before and he doesn't seem to be particularly interested in him, but he wants to fulfill his mother's wish.

Klara Kochańska, who won a Student Oscar in 2016 for LOKATORKI | TENANTS (FFC 2016), came up with the idea for her feature film debut together with her partner, Kasper Bajon, as a road movie and improvised parts of it. We remain very close to the two strangely unemotional protagonists who are almost as uninvolved in the refugee crisis as the political representatives of their country are. JT
