THE BRIBE

Alexey Kharitonov
Russia, 2018, 13 Min

Those involved change sides several times during an anti-bribery campaign: a decoy convicts an official of bribery and entangles himself in a network of dubious offers. Satire about a corrupt system.

Life is Short

A citizen bribes an official to shelve a previous case of bribery. But a control team against corruption appears in the office just after the money has been hands over. Both sides are convicted when the alleged decoy then tries to escape an old punishment by making an offer of money. On the way to an agreement between the "decoy", the official and the control team, an absurd competition breaks out to come up with the most inexpensive offer in order to sweep the incident under the carpet. By exaggerating the cliché of Russian corruption, Alexey Kharitonov succeeds in creating an amusing comedy in which none of the participants keeps a clean slate. ST
