CÓRKA TRENERA

A COACH’S DAUGHTER

Łukasz Grzegorzek
Poland, 2018, 92 Min

It is a scorching hot summer. Tennis coach Maciej is travelling with his 17-year-old daughter Wiktoria around Poland's provincial tennis courts in the hope of turning her into a tennis star. But this year everything is different: the two take Igor with them, another promising talent. A new world suddenly opens up for Wiktoria off the pitch.

A COACH'S DAUGHTER is a sensitive road movie about an ambitious father and his teenage daughter, who wants to go her own way. However much the love affair between Igor and Wiktoria might disturb the togetherness of the well-established team of father and daughter, cracks had already been appearing in the relationship for some time. In the film’s initially very dry mise-en-scène – which resembles a tough hour of training –, this change is gradually observed with increasing accuracy and empathy. Father Maciej increasingly loses his nerve, ignores his meniscus injury which he ought to let heal. His daughter withdraws further into her shell or refuses to follow any of the rules. An emotional rollercoaster emerges moving between affection and jealousy, ambition and self-abandonment in search of one's own self. As in sports, one rarely fights an opponent in life, but rather with or against oneself. RB
