BE PREPARED

Robert Gliński
Poland, 2017, 90 Min

A scout camp: scouts are singing patriotic hymns, the tents are named after martyrs from the Warsaw Uprising, rituals and paramilitary drill regulate the day. When a murder takes place in the camp, the scout leader Jacek tries to maintain order in the camp with an iron fist – and thereby stops at nothing for his morals.

What at first seems like a film from the coming-of-age cosmos, develops an anecdotal narrative, which misleads the audience and plays with our knowledge and that of the characters, into a tangible thriller about the belief in noble ideals and the brutal laws of reality. While the scout leader, Jacek, is conducting his investigations into the perpetrators, he gradually loses control. He fails due to the nonconformism of those new additions and the inability to assume responsibility – until the boundaries between right and wrong, truth and lie disappear.

With BE PREPARED, Robert Gliński presents a metaphor of the Polish government immersed in pale black-and-white images by letting young people from different social strata and representing different value systems clash with one another. He shows a regime of ruthless moralists who try to assert their values without empathy or understanding of tolerance. RB
