I HOPE YOU’LL DIE NEXT TIME :-)

Hungary, 2018, 96 Min

Youth drama about cyberbullying: Eszter, like so many of her classmates, fancies her English teacher, who unexpectedly seems to be reciprocating her feelings. They secretly develop a romance via SMS and video chat. But the gap between reality and the online world quickly shakes up Eszter's pastel-coloured world.

Whether it's proving yourself as a "real man" in front of other guys or hearing from a heartthrob that you're something special. Eszter and her classmates are primarily looking for affirmation. Their surroundings present them with clear role models: hypersexualized girls in animes and muscular guys with an endless number of girlfriends. Morality, empathy, trust and true friendship are secondary on the road to more recognition.

The young people in Mihály Schwechtje's debut film seem to navigate the immense flow of information affecting them each day with effortless ease. They may only communicate superficially with their parents, who are always busy, but the real emotional world only reveals itself in the social media. Random sexism, manipulation and abuse are almost taken for granted. Estzer's story takes a radical turn against the background of an uninhibited, social medialisation. DJ
