THE BRA

THE BRA

Veit Helmer
Germany, 2018, 90 Min

One day a bra gets caught on the locomotive of the freight train, which is driven day in and day out by its aging driver through narrow city passages, where clotheslines often hang across the tracks. When the train driver retires shortly thereafter, he spends his new leisure time on the mission to find the owner of the titillating garment.

Above all, Veit Helmers new work is a poetic fairy tale about being alone and the natural desire for closeness and love. Thus, the women approached by the train driver gladly take on the company of the tragic hero, and since the man has a good heart, both sides often hope for more. But none of the women fits the garment, which forces the engine driver to move on each time. In the colourful and impressively photographed images of this tongue-in-cheek film, Bollywood cinema, Chaplin-like social romanticism and the understatement of an Aki Kaurismäki merge into a picturesque kaleidoscope about age and the search for togetherness. Without a single spoken dialogue, Helmer once again shot a warm and detailed homage to the cinema after his film ABSURDISTAN – for the second time in Azerbaijan and again with an impressive international cast.
