CYBORGS: HEROES NEVER DIE

Akhtem Seitablaev
Ukraine, 2017, 113 Min

The battle was considered lost from the beginning, but for the Ukraine, the defence of Donetsk airport had a strong symbolic meaning. KIBORGY tells of the struggle of the few against a superior majority, of the loyalty to the homeland against the invasion. An action film as patriotic cinema, influenced by Hollywood models and also critical of their own side.

According to unconfirmed legends, the Ukrainian soldiers fought so bravely and persistently at the Donetsk airport that they were even called "cyborgs" by their opponents. The film takes place in September 2014 over a period of two weeks. Ukrainian volunteers reinforce the defence of the completely destroyed airport. Four months after the beginning of the armed conflict, the situation is almost hopeless. The focus is on seven soldiers with very different family and professional backgrounds. Among them is a musician and oligarch's son who secretly left his family to fight in the Donbass. The Hollywood role models of the 1.8 million Euro war and action film are unmistakable – it's about the defence of the homeland, comradeship and unconditional stamina. But the protagonists also deal with nationalism, the possibility of a free society, a world without borders and criticize the corrupt elites of the country. WMH
