POSLEDNÍ ŠICHTA TOMÁŠE HISEMA

THE LAST SHIFT OF THOMAS HISEM

Jindřich Andrš
Czech Republic, 2017, 29 Min

A single beam of light cuts the darkness underground, the lamp on Tomáš Hisem’s helmet. One last time before the mine closes in two days, the miner descends down to the depths, this time secretly carrying a helmet camera.

The viewer never sees Tomáš Hisem, but instead everything his eyes follow: endless pathways strutted with metal, the mine railway, the broken hoist. Sometimes his colleagues appear on screen, when Hisem gets their help and tries to get the machine running again. We hear the Silesian miner the entire time as he explains his work under ground, or when he goes off swearing. That the film team around Jindřich Andrš didn’t receive permission from the mine to film, turns out to be a strike of good fortune – such authentic images from the hard work underground are rare. CF
