WHEN THE PERSIMMONS GREW

Hilal Baydarov
Azerbaijan, 2019, 119 Min

Having been absent for years filmmaker Hilal Baydarov returns to his mother, who has now long lived alone, just in time to harvest the persimmons. Thus, the two now need to rediscover a common language. Thoughts are lost in enchanting views and nature determines the rhythm in this poetic film about time, home, family and tradition.

Every autumn the orange-coloured persimmons ripen in the garden. The whole family helps to prepare the fruits for drying, Baydarov too. After eight years abroad he returns to the garden of his childhood and the house with its sparsely furnished rooms. His mother is waiting for him, the train has no fixed timetable. The encounter, of a mentally overwhelmed son and his mother, who remains a mystery to him, initially remains wordless. She wanders across the screen, sits silently in the kitchen, with ancient photographs hanging over her, images full of memories of a now seemingly distant past.

In the rhythm of the images and sounds we immerse ourselves in a universe determined by nature that the director gradually reveals to us. From carefully composed frames, showing moments of childlike happiness as well as symbols of loneliness, he composes a contemplative and sentimental invitation to get to know another time, and world. It is thus with good reason that the film has been the recipient of numerous awards. RH
