JESENJI VALCER

AUTUMN WALTZ

Ognjen Petković
Serbia, USA, 2019, 18 Min

A couple attempts to escape a besieged city and yet they find themselves held up at a border crossing. The soldiers behave tyrannically, with their harmlessly playful approach soon giving way to arbitrary cruelty. The situation would appear to be hopeless, at which point a favour granted in the past suddenly pays off.

The arbitrary behaviour of the soldiers is reminiscent of that of overgrown youngsters who have resolved to occupy the village bridge and refuse to let anyone pass without harassment. One can imagine similar scenes at any military border crossing, be it in the past or present.

The slow-paced, poetic scenes, lending as they do a melancholic beauty to the surrounding grey landscapes, contrast with the brutal and hopeless reality, in the process engaging the viewer, through the smiles and shudders, in enthralling suspense, the negative outcome of which would appear inescapable.
