Seventy-year-old Uikan Mekulović was born a deaf-mute. Every day he sets off on foot to the nearest cinema in order to watch a film. The journey takes him across several kilometres of rocky mountain paths.

Momir Matović – Man and Nature

In his films cult Montenegrin documentary filmmaker Momir Matović, born in 1951, paints portraits of people who adapt to the rhythms of nature. He shoots in the karstic hinterlands of the fascinating yet unruly “Black Mountains”, which above all require patience of the locals. And it is with patience that Matović observes his protagonists who come up against not only an all-powerful nature, but also the forces of history: the evolution of values, gentrification and rural exodus all leave their mark. Symbols and traditions vanish, and at the same time the people who embody them.
