Summer 1980. Barbara asked for an application for exit. A doctor, she is now being transferred from the capital to a small hospital deep in the provinces, far from everything, as a form of punishment. Jörg, her lover from the west, is working on preparations for her escape, the Baltic Sea is one possibility.

Barbara is waiting. The new apartment, the neighbours, the summer and the countryside, none of that moves her any more. She works in a paediatric surgery under the direction of her new boss Andre, at once attentive to patients and aloof towards her colleagues. Her future can wait. Andre confuses her. His trust in her professional skills, his care, his smile. Why does he cover up her commitment to the young runaway Stella? Has he taking a liking to her? Is he in love? Barbara begins to lose control. Of herself, of her plans, of love. The day of her planned escape is just around the corner. In a manner enthralling and emotional, full-on and very immediate, Christian Petzold speaks of people who meet in a state of alertness; of a truth that does not exist without a lie, and a love that is on guard against itself; of the freedom to go and freedom to stay.
