ADVENTURES OF A MATHEMATICIAN

ADVENTURES OF A MATHEMATICIAN

A moral dilemma in exile: the Polish mathematician Stanisław M. Ulam went to the USA as a Harvard Junior Fellow in 1938. From afar he follows the German invasion of Poland, and in his new homeland he helps to develop the hydrogen bomb. For the scientist the question of moral responsibility arises in several aspects.

On the one hand there is the inhuman destructive potential of the new weapon, on the other its deterrent potential. “We need the bomb before Hitler has it”, is how the nuclear physicists involved in the development of the atomic bomb at the research centre in Los Alamos justify their work, including several Jewish migrants who fled the Nazis. But what if the bomb was used actually? The destruction of Nagasaki and Hiroshima later split the group; Ulam is involved in the development of the first computer. This multifaceted biopic was created on the basis of Ulam's autobiography, which went by the same name, with the support of the German-Polish Film Fund and was shot at locations including the Spreewald Forest and Cottbus-Drewitz.
