The End

Vladimir Kott
Russia, 2020, 102 Min

A successful director caught in a crisis: Mitya is fed up with the film industry. His thoughts are dominated by Marcello Mastroianni, who encourages him to finally get back to film-making as an art form rather than make mainstream series. After an argument with his producer he ends up not only blacklisted by his studio, but also misunderstood by his wife

Mitya imagines the actress in front of him in different roles: in Cannes in a red dress and high heels, in Venice seriously ill and suffering, in Berlin as a fighter for LGBTQ rights who lands up in prison. He's fed up with art house clichés, mainstream productions and submissive interns whom he advises to leave the film industry as soon as possible, in this effortlessly staged comedy about the self-doubts and desires of a filmmaker who, played by Vladimir Kott himself, is vaguely reminiscent of Woody Allen. Kott is one of the most productive contemporary directors on the Russian scene; as of 2006 he has directed nine TV series and seven feature films in which, employing various approaches, he offers a critical take on our latent tendency towards eternal dissatisfaction with ourselves.
