Wendish Berlin

Toni Bruk
Germany, 1996, 29 Min

Lausitzer Platz and Wendenschloss, place names ranging from Ketzin to Marzahn, Sorbian organists in the church, wet nurses in traditional costumes in the paintings of Zille: a journey of discovery to Berlin's Slavic core and a Sorbian community that remained vibrant well into the mid-1990s.

This documentary, created for rbb's Łužyca TV, moves the viewer in its acknowledgement that the Sorbian institutions of post-reunification Berlin belong as much to the past as archaeological artefacts from the early Middle Ages. The film also catches up with notable Sorbian figures such as Alfred Krawc and Měto Pernack in what today represents a rare contemporary document.
