Stollen

Stollen

Laura Reichwald
Germany, 2020, 85 Min

"Glück auf, Glück auf, the foreman is coming." Yet what, apart from historical songs and technical monuments, remains in the Erzgebirge now the mines have gone? And how are these and other traditions lived today? Structural change as illustrated by the example of the southern Saxon community of Pöhla.

After the fall of the Wall the miners only go to the Zinnkammern Pöhla mining museum in Saxony for demonstration purposes. Recently, however, work on the Pöhla-Globenstein mine was initiated and the further mining of tin, as well as indium and tungsten, is being explored. Despite the concomitant risk to health and of the overexploitation of nature, the outcry remains muted. Instead, the locals prefer to dispute the right way to make Christmas stollen, football club Erzgebirge Aue's chances of promotion or the region's song lore, even the latter not without its controversies.
