Magdalena

Magdalena

Filip Gieldon
PL, 2021, 100 Min

A DJ at odds with her past. Torn between her passion as a DJ and her responsibility as a young mother, the mute Magdalena struggles through her precarious everyday existence. When she falls in love with the club manager Julia, she finally seems to be able to live her life the way she wants, and yet the price she has to pay in return is high.

Magdalena wears her Corona mask, sometimes red, sometimes black, sometimes with a smiley on it, like a protective shield. Life hasn’t always been kind to her. The young woman is dependent on her mother Justyna, who has to take care of her little daughter after Magdalena's nocturnal party excursions. Magdalena dreams of a great club career, of better opportunities in Berlin, and yet her traumatic past keeps catching up with her. And she is constantly exploited since she refuses to speak. Her love affair with the club operator Julia is similarly ill-omened. Filip Gieldon's coming-of-age drama, captured throughout from Magdalena's perspective, narrates a touchingly intimate tale of a constant struggle against almost insurmountable obstacles. His debut film is an impressive portrait of a driven woman who yearns to determine her own fate.
