ISKUSTVOTO DA PADASH

The Art Of Falling

Orlin Milchev
BG, 2022, 108 Min

Sensitive coming of age cinema from Bulgaria. After 17-year-old Borislava, whom everyone just calls Bori, narrowly escapes being raped by boys her own age at school, her grandfather signs her up for judo and takes her out of school. Apart from her grandfather there is no one who cares and yet, against all the odds, Bori regains self-confidence and begins to make her own way in life.

Bori is 17 and lives with her caring grandfather and unstable, alcohol-addicted mother. At school she is ignored by the other girls and almost raped by three boys in the toilet. Somehow the reserved Bori manages to prevent the worst from happening, and yet her grandfather has had enough! The hero from bygone communist days brings Bori to an old friend, from whom she is to learn judo. And it soon pays dividends, as Bori quickly gains in confidence and even manages to make friends. The only thing that remains strained is her relationship with her mother, who stubbornly keeps silent about who her real father is. In this, his feature film debut, Orlin Milchev succeeds in creating a sensitive portrait of a young woman who comes across as almost too delicate for her harsh environment and yet slowly manages to find herself, demonstrating in the process that we should never underestimate anyone.
