Miro and Drago, immigrants from the former
Yugoslavia from which they fled during
the civil war, live in Toronto. On learning
that Dado, a friend he hadn't heard word
from for nearly two decades, is now a wanted
war criminal, Miro decides to search for
him. He ascertains that Dado occasionally
visits a small village not far from Sarajevo
and thus sets off on a journey back to
Bosnia without regard for how he might go
about finding his long lost friend in a country
from which he has in the meantime
grown alienated and in which stories are
told, the majority of which are nothing
more than myths. Did Dado suffer breakdown
during the war? Or did he join up
with Serbian militias? Does he really return
to the house of his father now and again or
has he long left for pastures new?
The director himself fled Bosnia for Canada
together with his parents at the age of nine
and currently lives in Toronto. Using Miro's
current state of amnesia, Dado's rival narrative
and Drago's trauma of immigration,
Drljača attempts to bring questions surrounding
the trauma of migration and
alienation as well as the pain of memory
and forgetfulness to the big screen.
In spite of the modest resources the
director had at his disposal the end result
is an impressively calm, cool and surreal
reflection on the inner-life of refugees of
war, an authentic balance of truth and
imagination.
