KOBIETA NA DACHU

Woman on the Roof

Anna Jadowska
PL/FR/SE , 2022, 95 Min

Mirka has always tried to please everyone. But now there isn't even enough money to feed the fish in the aquarium. A wife and mother, she has always acted in accordance with the wishes of others, that is until an act of desperation changes everything: error or emancipation? A haunting, softly spoken film about a 60-year-old who, slowly but surely, embarks on the rocky road to becoming her true self.

Mirka is an unremarkable woman, around the age of 60, who has always wanted to please everyone. Her marriage with husband Julek is loveless, and her adult son takes her care for granted. Even in the hospital on the maternity ward her conscientious work is rarely appreciated. When one day the police turn up at the door and arrest Mirka, everyone is flabbergasted. Armed only with a knife, she had wanted to rob a bank. She is deeply ashamed, and yet should she be? Director Anna Jadowska, the recipient of five awards, including the award for best film, at the FFC 2017 with “Wilde Rosen”, once again describes the fate of women in contemporary Poland. External views, traditional moral concepts and the expectations of those around her determine Mirka's view of herself on her typically post-socialist prefabricated housing estate. Her road to greater self-realisation is rocky, and yet the consistent narrative from her perspective slowly but steadily wins the audience over to a woman who no longer wants to merely be a victim.
