BUTTERFLY VISION

Maksym Nakonechnyi
HR/SE/CZ/UA , 2022, 107 Min

Ukrainian soldier Lilia finally returns home after being held captive in eastern Ukraine. Physically at least. Since beneath the surface she has not yet put the time spent in captivity behind her. An image of a woman in critical circumstances, one which is unfortunately the reality for many today.

In this, his feature film debut, director Maksym Nakonechnyi innovatively combines a number of visual media, including dreamlike CGI sequences as well as mobile and drone footage, in order to make the main protagonist’s inner state perceptible to the viewer. At the same time, the plot is extremely authentic, one might say almost documentary-like. The film was co-written by Iryna Tsilyk, a filmmaker who works for the human rights organisation Invisible Battalion, an advocacy project that researches and provides support to Ukrainian women participating in the war in eastern Ukraine. As is often the case with war films, the plot is a parable and is not to be taken literally. The consequences of a war reverberate long after the event and leave scars behind; not only on the bodies of the individual soldiers, but also in society as a whole.
