Miracol

MIRACLE

Bogdan George Apetri
RO/CZ/LV , , 118 Min

A stunning reinterpretation of the crime genre in two harrowing episodes. One tells of the beautiful Cristina, a 19-year-old nun who becomes the victim of a crime. The other follows Inspector Marius as he tries to reconstruct the crime. In doing so, he loses himself in his imagination and ultimately finds himself playing a dangerous game.

It's still early in the morning when nun Cristina furtively rushes into town in a taxi. Though not permitted to do so, a sister helps her and slips her a mobile phone. Cristina would appear to be hiding a big secret as she wanders around town looking for a man she can't find. Still not able to do so, she returns home and becomes the victim of a crime. Thus we have a crime thriller. At which point however director Bogdan George Apetri is only really getting started. Inspector Marius tries to get to the bottom of the case and yet the narrative threads blur with his imagination: What is reality? Who is the perpetrator? Who is the victim? The images of Romanian star cinematographer Oleg Mutu are captured with virtuosity. Add to these the outstanding performances delivered by the cast, centred around Ioana Bugarin and Emanuel Parvu, and the end result is an enigmatic masterpiece reminiscent of all-time classics, one that caused a sensation at last year’s Venice Film Festival.
