Wut auf Kuba

Why Chickens Don't Fly

Naira Cavero Orihuel
Germany, 2022, 78 Min

Unconventional road movie with socio-critical depth - filmed in Cottbus. Throw away your mobile phone and leave everything behind? In search of freedom, young single mother Marlene does just that - and runs off with Sonne, who happens to cross her path.

FSK12

Marlene has lost her job in the second-hand shop. And now what? Single parent with two daughters in an East German prefabricated building, difficult relationship with her mother and her ex. In addition, there are memories of Marlene's grandfather that haunt her and come more and more to the fore. But then the sun appears - and suddenly everything seems easy. Leaving the old life behind and the children with grandma, rescuing a chicken and finally feeling herself again in search of adventure and the great freedom. Director Naira Cavero Orihuel shot her graduation film from the HFF Munich in Cottbus - and underscores the urge for freedom of her non-conformist protagonists with, among other things, the song "Egal" by the Hanoverian women's punk band "Bärchen & die Milchbubis" from the early 1980s. With WUT AUF KUBA she makes you want to get out - even if it's only around the corner, for a short moment.
