Bartka

Volodymyr Bakum
Ukraine, 2022, 92 Min

In order to slow down the climate catastrophe, the forest ecosystem is of great importance. Director Volodymyr Bakum takes a precise look at forestry in the Ukrainian Carpathians and questions the point of cutting down the forests.

Forest-covered hills as far as the eye can see. Snow-covered fir trees. The camera follows district forester Vasyl Pavlovych and his staff into the forest. One more year, then Pavlovych will retire. What happens after that? Ukrainian director Volodymyr Bakum takes his time and, in BARTKA, casts a precisely observing glance at this important profession, which usually takes place far from the limelight. Decisions have to be made, trees marked, felled and transported away. Meanwhile, on the car radio, there is talk of devastating floods in various European countries - the climate crisis has long since arrived. BARTKA is a quiet film, rooted in the forests, people and cultural context of Ukraine, but with a view to global issues. It invites discussion, questions the necessity of deforestation and criticises the overexploitation of the crucial forest ecosystem.
