IMAGO

Olga Chajdas
PL/NL/CZ , 2023, 113 Min

Poland, 1987. Solidarność is protesting on the streets of Gdańsk, but Ela is not interested in big politics. She has her own struggle. A young artist with extraordinary creativity and a vivid imagination joins a psychedelic punk band, becomes a star of the underground scene and tries to express herself in a gray world where self-expression, especially female one, is not welcome. An impressive portrait that captures both the spirit of the age and the eternal fight of a woman for the right to be herself.

The name of Lech Walesa, the leader of the Solidarność movement, is mentioned only once. «Let them play, them political boys», says Ela to her roommates in a psychiatric hospital when they suddenly start discussing the news. IMAGO is a biography based on a real-life story. Co-writer and lead actress Lena Góra plays her own mother, Ela Góra, a female artist who was a punk star of the Baltic Tricity underground stage, struggled with bipolar disorder and found herself completely unprepared for the unexpected motherhood. Director Olga Chajdas takes viewers on a psychedelic journey into the world of underground clubs, where the audience freezes in a trance to a new song, untidy bars drowning in cigarette smoke, and cramped apartments where entire families huddle together in complete lovelessness. But even in these conditions, creative freedom flourishes against all odds.
