NIEBEZPIECZNI DŻENTELMENI

DANGEROUS GENTLEMEN

Maciej Kawalski
Poland, 2022, 107 Min

Zakopane, 1914. Doctor and author Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński wakes up after a night out. He can't remember the events of the last few hours, and then a body is found on the sofa. A fast-paced version of “Hangover”, from the final phase of the Belle Epoque between morals, slapstick and political confusion, which allusively and intelligently makes fun of Polish and therefore European history.

Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński, Witkacy, Joseph Conrad and Bronisław Malinowski are faced with a mystery: they don't know who the dead man in their living room is. It soon turns out that it is Marquis Boy, a writer with French passport, who fell victim to a mix-up; his murderers were actually targeting doctor Tadeusz Żeleński. However, the four well-known bohemian personalities have no time to lose because the police is already knocking on the door. What follows is an eventful ride through the Tatra mountain landscape, including guest appearances by Vladimir Lenin and Józef Piłsudski.

The “Polish Paris” of Zakopane is now turning out to be the scene of a huge conspiracy involving artists, politicians, revolutionaries and gangsters. In his debut film, Maciej Kawalski shows icons of the Polish culture and politics in a new light.

The doctor, lecturer and do-gooder Tadeusz “Boy” Żeleński is taken from a real figure from Polish cultural history, as are other participants involved in the plot such as the pianist Karol Szymanowski and the writer Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. A captivating story full of humor and adventure, presented by thrilling performances from prominent actors such as Tomasz Kot (Cold War) and Andrzej Seweryn (In the Swamp, Różyczka).
