GOOD BYE, LENIN!

GOOD BYE, LENIN!

Wolfgang Becker,
DE, 2003, 120 Min

Turbo capitalism meets nostalgia. When his mother wakes up from coma, Alex has to make the German Democratic Republic (GDR) come back to life. Wolfgang Becker's cult classic turns 20 and humorously reflects topics that correlate with the collapse of the GDR and still have an effect today.

When Christiane Kerner, a committed GDR citizen fell into a coma in 1989, the world was still fine, at least for her. Shortly afterwards, all of Germany is celebrating the collapse of the Berlin Wall. And Christiane Kerner? Sleeps through the party! Months later she wakes up and there is great joy, but also the fear that the news of a reunified Germany sending her straight back into coma. So her son Alex decides a radical thing: He resurrects the GDR in their 79 square meter apartment. Wolfgang Becker tells a brilliant social satire in which you can't stop laughing, at the same time the film reflects on what was lost in the way reunification took place. This film made Daniel Brühl become a superstar overnight and became one of the biggest box office hits in German film history.
