To attend vocational school and experience the magic of winter, Trúc moves from Vietnam to a small town in the Ore Mountains. Fascinated by the forests, mountains, and snow yet ridiculed by her classmates, she loses herself in the darkness of the tunnels during a tour of a mine – and ends up in a parallel world that much resembles her own; only the people there are different. She encounters Duc, whose parents own the local Vietnamese takeaway restaurant, as well as a mysterious mountain spirit. Employing calm, precise imagery, Claudia Tuyết Scheffel interweaves her own experiences of alienation, everyday racism, and familial pressure with magical realism. Amidst the brusque characters, poetic images of nature, and a mounting sense of threat, a film emerges that speaks in equal measure of home and foreign lands – and asks questions, the implications of which extend far beyond the Ore Mountains.
